Current Research

Hilary is currently undertaking a PhD in the Faculty of Information Technology entitled: International students' use of online information resources: Implications for information literacy education in a context of cultural diversity.

Supervisors: A/Professor Christine Bruce and Mr Michael Middleton.

This qualitative case study incorporates the Critical Incident Technique. Data collection and analysis is in progress. Initial findings for a group of 12 international students indicate: an imbalance between these students' more effective IT skills and their generally less developed information literacy; and a range of challenges associated with cultural differences, language limitations and limited previous experience of libraries and independent use of online information for learning. Project outcomes will include proposals for developing an inclusive reflective approach to information use for learning that responds to the diverse experience and information literacy needs of international students.
